THE REPUBLIC

Charmides

"Charmides" is a dialogue written by the ancient Greek philosopher Plato, in which Socrates engages in a discussion with Charmides, a young and handsome nobleman, about the nature of temperance or self-control.
In the dialogue, Charmides initially believes that he possesses this virtue, but is unable to provide a clear definition of what it means. Socrates proceeds to question him about the nature of temperance, exploring various possible definitions, and ultimately concluding that true temperance must be based on knowledge.
Socrates then applies his method of questioning to Charmides' cousin, Critias, who claims to have knowledge of the nature of temperance. However, Socrates demonstrates that Critias' definition is flawed and inconsistent.
The dialogue ends without a clear resolution, leaving the question of the nature of temperance open-ended. "Charmides" is an important work in the development of Plato's philosophy, as it foreshadows his later focus on the importance of knowledge and wisdom in the pursuit of virtue.
